2011 Topps Finest Football Box Break

November 6, 2011

Ryan Mallett Finest Atomic RookieI always look forwards to Topps Finest due to the fact that without a doubt, it is always one of the funkiest sets every year. You won’t get a great many cards, but what you will get is some of the stars and enough variety to make it one of the more fun breaks of the year.

What you’ll get – 2 Mini Boxes with 6 packs in each. 5 cards in each pack. Box Price Range – Med to High – $110+

Base Veteran Cards – 35

I don’t believe Topps have changed the stock used for Finest in some time, so expect the same heavy foil stock you’ve come to know. This years base cards don’t have the shadow background behind the player that last years had and the player is now totally “cut out” and isolated on a dimpled pattern background. One definite improvement over last years Finest (which was pretty good anyway) is that the name and position don’t take up nearly as much room on the card and this has enabled Topps to use larger photo’s of the players, and it’s noticeable. Player selection is always top notch in Finest and you’re just about guaranteed to get some of the big names. One small problem I found in our break was that a number of cards have a fine scratch across the card about a centimetre from the top edge. Obviously created during production, this effected 6 of the 35 veteran cards but no others in the box.

Base Rookie Cards – 11

1 Round 1 Pick

6 Round 2 Picks

1 Round 3 Pick

2 Round 4 Picks

1 Round 6 Pick

Base RC’s look the same as the base veterans, except they have the Topps “Rookie Card” shield on them. Significant RC’s we pulled were Jake Locker, Andy Dalton and DeMarco Murray

Inserts and Parallels – 12

Here’s where the real fun begins with a box of Finest.

4 Base Refractors (3 Veterans, 1 Rookie – Jake Locker)

1 Gold Refractor /50 (LeSean McCoy)

3 Xfractors /399 (Veterans – T.Brady, J. Maclin, S.Jonson)

2 Finest Moments Inserts (Veterans – M. Sanchez , D. Keller)

2 Finest Atomic Rookie Die Cuts (R. Mallett, J. Jernigan)

Game Used and Autographs -2

1 Rookie Autographed Patch Blue Refractor /75 (K. Rudolph)

1 Autographed Jersey Rookie /589 (V. Brown)

A couple of nice design cards only let down a little by being sticker autographs. A necessary evil perhaps, but how good would these look with on card autographs ? However the “in a window” use of the autograph stickers like on the Vincent Brown card does go a long way to improving the look and at least shows that Topps are willing to make an effort to make best use of what they have.

Final thoughts –

Finest is always good fun, and this year is no exception. For the price I think it could probably do with another game used hit or two per hobby box, but probably the biggest disappointment for me was not a single Rams card ! Oh well, maybe better luck next time !

Eye Candy –
